Theresa Williams, Creator of The Letter Project
(MFA Fiction, MA English, BA English, Art)
I’ve always loved writing and receiving mail. THE LETTER PROJECT originates from this very simple fact.
I’m a University Lecturer, and I’m always looking for ways to encourage my students to create vivid writing. I had the idea that if I created an assignment that asked the students to write letters instead of essays then they might escape the trap of stilted writing. Then it occurred to me that this academic assignment might have a broader application. And so I decided to create this blog and to invite others to share art through letters.
I’m also a writer, and authors’ letters have always given me courage and shown me I am not alone in my struggles.
I’ve published one novel, The Secret of Hurricanes (MacAdam/Cage 2002), short stories in The Sun, Hunger Mountain, and other magazines, and poems in a number of magazines, including Gargoyle, DMQ Review, Paterson Literary Review, Lilliput Review, Barnwood International Poetry Magazine, Apple Valley Review, and many others. My chapbook, The Galaxy to Ourselves, was published in 2012.
